Pocahontas was Walt Disney's 33rd feature film, released in 1995 and was considered to be part of the Disney Renaissance. It was co-directed by Eric Goldberg (along with Mike Gabriel) - a huge name in animation and this was his directorial debut. The movie received two academy awards!
In the 1990's, Sotheby's and Disney worked together to hold auctions of original artwork used in the Disney Renaissance films. In February of 1996 they held the Art Of Pocahontas sale and this piece was originally sold in that sale (lot 270, catalog not included). Since cels were no longer being used to animate the characters (computers were being used) Disney created hand-painted presentation cels that matched the image on the screen when these backgrounds were used. These cels are one-of-a-kind.
