“Chim’s early work in France and the Spanish Civil War established his reputation as a world-leading photojournalist. After World War II, he achieved greater recognition for his photographs of war orphans forUNESCO. When Hollywood studios expanded their filmmaking in Europe, Chim was a frequent choice to take portraits of leading actors including Audrey Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Fred Astaire, Kirk Douglas, and Sophia Loren.
“Chim tells the story of his encounter with 20-year-old Loren: ‘I photographed Sophia in 1955, a budding actress. We talked over the phone and I explained what I wanted. She invited me over for a Sunday early-morning meeting; I found her in bed, in a dark blue negligee, although she was talking on the phone. She got up and changed. We went to a covered balcony in her apartment and I had nothing else to do but record a stream of poses, which somehow met my memory of wartime pin-ups. All this was done with a touch of irony and maliciousness.’”
— Ben Shneiderman, David (Chim) Seymour’s nephew

David Seymour (born Dawid Szymin; (November 20, 1911 – November 10, 1956), or Chim (pronounced shim, an abbreviation of the surname "Szymin"), was a Polish photographer and photojournalist. Chim was known for his images from the Spanish Civil War, for co-founding Magnum Photos with Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa and George Rodger, and for his project "Children of War" with UNICEF that captured the plight of children in the aftermath of World War II. He became president of Magnum after Capa's death in 1954 and held this post until his own death in 1956 by Egyptian machine gun fire in the aftermath of the Suez crisis.
His photographs are in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Library of Congress and more.
