From Bruce Davidson: "In late 1965 Esquire sent me to a "topless" restaurant in San Francisco. The editors wanted pictures of an entertainer who had large breasts. I stood in the audience and saw the passive look of women on small stage platforms swaying their naked bodies to loud music. I went into the kitchen where a young waitress, with stretch marks from a child she had borne, carried platters of food to vacant-faced businessmen on their lunch hour. The true subject of these photographs was not their naked bodies but their endless aloneness."
