This is an wonderful find! It was originally even in the original wrapping from when it was purchased. We removed the wrapping for scanning, but it will be included.
It is of course from Astro Boy - the characters in it are from "Earth Defense Army" or when it was re-used in the 1964 film "The Brave in Space." Only a few episodes were produced in color from the original series. It comes with a hand-painted background. It also comes with a drawing on the back that seems associated with the series. The drawing looks more like a practice sheet or doodle sheet (perhaps prelim drawings) - it is folded and taped to the back of the background. The setup has an odd sort of fake paper "mat" on the front as well, and that is original to when it was purchased. Overall size is 15" x 11". Both the cel and the background have animation peg holes.
It was at least used in a 1960's flexi-disk and record set (and may also have been used in the episode, but we haven't verified that yet):
朝日ソノラマ
腕アトム
地球
防衛隊の巻
作片岡忠三
The BEST part is - this cel came directly from the Wendell Washer estate. Wendell, like all career animators, had files of artwork they collected. This was one of the pieces he had for himself! Keep an eye on our site, as we have thousands of more pieces coming soon. Note: it includes the folder in which Wendell had it stored.
